Denounce

Heartfelt sympathy for the people of GAZA,

 May Allah redeem  !

The Pillars of Might
Rarely cease fire
Or just care
To plunder the cause
And compromise -

'Gaza Trembles
People die
Zionist’s kill
Children under soldiers boot
The world cries'

Humanity trampled
 Across killing fields
Bitter stench
Unmarked cemeteries
No end at sight
Death and helplessness
Just to dominate
While truce is broken
Again and again
Timeless in pain
Facing the ordeal
Dig another trench
Overlook conscience
While Leaders debate
Blame for safe haven
As another helpless father
Buries his dead
On bloody unmarked
Where anguish compels
Undone by justice
Like burnt hideaways
Feeling like fire
Coming out of throat’s of hell !

‘Gaza trembles
People die
Zionist’s smile
Children under soldier’s boot
The world cries‘

Save us Allah
Is this the end
Come on believer’s
Unite
Fight as one
Help fellow mankind
End genocide
Redeem the thirst
To reconcile
Make sure vulture’s don’t fly -

‘Gaza trembles
People die
Zionist’s smile
Children under soldier’s boot
The world cries‘

Cry out mankind
Pray for the gone
Reach out to recite
The silent oath
To protect life
Mobilize voice of Palestine
Fighting the fight
Of a lifetime
Under a twilight
Of a thousand cries
In spite,

‘Gaza trembles
People die
Zionist’s smile
Children under soldier’s boot
The world cries‘ ........

Liberation

I was born in a time of liberation
Never saw blood that was shed
Only heard tales
Of brave men and women-

They fought to make this land great
For the future to behold-

Great speeches left their mark on our minds
Men of great stature died
Guns replaced promised love
History was distorted to change time
While the peasant cried
Some politicians use faith for gain
Fundamentalists dig intellectual’s grave
None there to judge acts
Politics of rape began...

I walked fields of my land
Found an innocence so kind
Something the fortunate can exploit
Please their pride,
Only a few control their fate
While they sweat
Making some great...

No literacy to open the mind
68000 villages left out of sight
Peace for the Socialite
When will Allah hear our call
There are vultures all around
Eating away flesh and eyes
Is this why three million people died?

Governments come and go
Anarchy prevails more than before
Assurances of fair play
While making past mistakes
Money key issue to buy and sell
Concrete evidence of heavenly hell
These people should be sent to jail
Or made to toil under the scorching sun
Feel the farmer’s pain,
Grow insane...

Generals of my time have taken it all
Stayed in power too long
Autocrats should rot in hell
They make everyone their slave
Whatever U say we saw it all
Democracy being turned upside down
A land of freedom should have it all
Peace and love
For the muscled common man
Who does it all
Food, shelter, jobs
Is all that they want...

Be sensuous the Ruling class
Exploitation also has a cost
I warn everyone as time will say
The poor shall rise again
Too much time is passing by
Patience is running out
No guns can stop the mass
Wounded tigers fear none–

Please don’t forget these lines I say
Use true intellect to read this poem
A poet with a broken pen
Who may never feel this way again
Don’t U think fairness
Should come back to our Lives?

No threats can oppress the thinkers mind
Because they feel pain
To see tricks of power
U play so well,

I predict your time shall soon end.

New faces will come and go
Follow,
Path taught by U
What can they do?

Don’t forgive me for writing these lines
Only serving time
A country being raped
By oppressors and oppressed
How much can she take?

Take time to ask your mind
Don’t use Islam to commit crimes
Razakar’s, Mullahs
Out there in the streets
Preaching their peace
Using religion as a shield to
Protect and destroy
Most of them don’t know the meaning of
The very things they teach.

Nobody is above the law they say
While killers walk free if they pay
This is the justice of our land
No reward for sacrifice...

These are difficult times
When will peace return?
Time and tide will go on...

Sad to sing this song
Love for this land
Made me write these words
Making me restless...

I pray to the setting sun
A poet’s wish so that an artist returns
Paint my land like S.M Sultan
Who too felt misery of the common man,

Let’s hope justice takes pride

Showing Bengali’s a newest sunlight...

Fireplace Blues

She talks of broken love
He smells cheap perfume
Mother cries all night
They all drink Daddy’s blood....

Sister please tell when
Brother will u be there
Lord we shall feast,

There will be laughter
There will be wine
There will be answers,

Tongue will swallow
Anything in sight..

Burn pages in the city square
Sit out all day in the snow
Buy placards
Find someone..

The fireplace shall burn tonight;

I shall sacrifice my lover’s gift
For the wood that burns
The tree that is no more..

Fumes live in hollowed heavens
Deep inside mournful lungs
And the mind lies reckless
Searching for a perfect start
After the last finishing..

There is vision
There is reaction
There is joy
There is grief
There are songs,

There is just one voice.....

Sacrifice or Stand Restless

 Among proud cells of knowledge
Pride builds happy nests
Wrestling others to know of their quest
Contemplating deeds of the gifted.

Wise men left their marks on our books
Morals took separate outlooks
Young minds hungry for knowledge
Never ending tale of anxious moments
Under shadows of a light that deceives
True knowledge is as light as a breeze
In names of certificate, degrees?

Please feel free,

Forgive teachers
Who preached their thoughts
Noble deeds, unfulfilled trust
Brotherhood a must
In this era of guns, fame
Too many die
Few reign
Nightmares of holocaust, cocaine...

No remorse can change this world
Bloodshed
Causes unheard..

Fools unleash terror in a subtle way
Innocence gets sacrificed for fair play
Remembering a light that shows the way
Inside an abyss of a thousand tales...

Still fight battle of senses
Whether to sacrifice or stand restless
Guns have replaced true love
Not all success stands on strong grounds...

Bemused like the thousand stars
Guilt plays a silent part
See destruction's of human hearts...

Reasoning

Convince another invigorating soothe
Blinding every forfeited lust
Still left standing,

Values venture cold and heat
Eyes silence every after beat
Step into the sink
Swim every breath
Telling stories of how it is
Whether truth touches justice
Letting honor benefit
From the intriguing middle
Rather than odds

Ruthlessly surrendering to one god…

Journey - Open Arms

Dream

Hear songs of the bats
Came to say goodbye
Last night
While I was taking a ride

Guess what happened after time
Felt like a flight
Bats and me without a wing
In the gear
Warning the wretched
Of hanging time
Redeeming pride
Feeling joy
Like a tear drop
Through the eyes of heaven
Who has seen it all
Unlike the virgin bat
Does not even have sight
Like me
Who drinks Potter’s wine,

Virgin bat walks over my spine
After time........

Retrospect
Shahriar Feroze reviews Shams Monwer’s poetic quest for creative excellence...

The collection of poems, named Retrospect peruses not only the writer’s thrive to create but speaks of his imagination and belief. His life and thoughts, according to him, was shown and shaped by no other than the late S.M. Sultan. However, a collection of 39 poems by Shams Monower speaks of a dreamer who has picked up the pen for re-discovering himself and the reality that surrounds him.
Shams the poet sketched reality of post – liberation Bangladesh through the opening poem Liberation. It’s packed with multiple messages complimented with a sharp tone of dissent and grief. It speaks of promises made by our leaders which they failed to deliver and exploits of successive military juntas and the neo-bourgeoisie elite in Bangladesh.
He also referred to fundamentalism, extremism and lawlessness that are starkly noticeable in today’s Bangladesh. Most of them are topped with an idealistic dream of a rebel - but so are many poems in recent times. To many, it may appear to resemble proletariat demands and anguish. However, the poem too, concludes with Sultan’s envisioning of a Bangladesh meant for all.
His heartache to be a part of an unfair social order is farther reiterated in the Survival’s Inconsistent Sanity.
The poet may have worshipped earth, wind and fire in line with his late guru Sultan but at the same time can’t be labelled as an atheist. He seeks refuge from torments and oppressions to god by a number of his poems including prayer; extols his guru Sultan; weave imaginations about choice, destiny and redemption and ruminates over the repeated disillusionment's delivered by newspapers.
One hand bites the dust is composed to remonstrate the killings caused by the western powers to hunt down Bin Laden. But can’t resist from asking the poet, by killing Bin Laden have the US or its allied countries for that matter have really won the War on Terror?
The poet’s sense of erotica seemed to puzzle this reviewer while reading Jargon. The joys of sex must have been explored from firsthand experiences but the similes and metaphors used to express satisfaction seemed too ceremonial. Perhaps, it was my inadequacy to pierce through his poetic lenses.
Nevertheless, poets have immense capabilities to express their thoughts like abstract artists, many of which are either misunderstood or not understood at all. The poet Shams Monwar’s poems appeared like a mix between nonfigurative and concrete expressions. The poet also hasn’t resorted to strictly follow any particular poetic aspects, so assonance, alliteration, ambiguity; onomatopoeia similar to the rhythm may seem strewn. Composed through an open approach Retrospect speaks of a man whose subjects of interest are diversified.
The bottom line is most of Shams’s subjects have already been written about but an attempt to suggest differential interpretation of old subjects or to evoke emotive responses are surely there. Also the poems are not restricted within specific cultures and genres.
The reviewer is a journalist
